![]() ![]() The software company also said that it has shut down the hackers’ access to its users and updated its software. In a statement on Monday, Piriform apologized to its users and said that it contacted law enforcement. And given the billions of downloads the app has secured, and the millions that it attracts each week, it’s likely that millions of users were infected. However, Cisco Talos says anyone who was running CCleaner version 5.33 was susceptible to the hack. Unfortunately, that’s a bit of a moving target right now, since Piriform hasn’t completed its investigation. Worst of all, Piriform wasn’t immediately aware that its software had been hacked, leaving users at risk for weeks. That information could all be used to dupe users and ultimately steal sensitive information. The malicious software would allow hackers to access information about a victim’s computer, including the type of software it was running, processes it was running, and more. Get Data Sheet, Fortune ’s technology newsletter How Did the Hack Work?Īccording to Piriform, it’s believed that hackers “illegally modified” a version of its software released in August that allowed them to remotely execute malicious activities on infected machines, like collecting a person’s keystrokes or sending ransomware to make a quick profit off stolen data. The security researcher estimates that CCleaner attracts more than 5 million new downloads a week. ![]() How Popular Is CCleaner?ĬCleaner is an exceedingly popular app with download estimates of more than 2 billion, according to Cisco Talos. It’s designed by a company named Piriform, which was acquired earlier this year by security app maker Avast. Ultimately, CCleaner aims at making computers faster and more reliable. The app features a host of tools that remove old files, clean up fragmented hard drives, and remove junk. Instead, CCleaner for a period of weeks was compromised and according to security researchers at Cisco Talos, hackers could have targeted users “for any number of malicious purposes.”įortune has compiled the following quick look at everything you need to know to stay safe: What Is CCleaner?ĬCleaner is a program designed for both Windows and the Mac. You never know when your PC will break.A popular file-clean up program called CCleaner has become the latest known target of hackers after security researchers discovered that it had been compromised with a “backdoor.” That backdoor would have allowed hackers to target unsuspecting users who thought that they had downloaded and were using the app from a legitimate source. ![]() Use cloud services, don't keep things in the client. Just keep your PC as simple / as clean as possible and you will be fine. Keyboard only and it's faster and more efficient this way. Except graphical applications such as Adobe, eventually I can operate Windows and its applications (Chrome, Edge, Windows, Visual Studio, etc) without a pointing device. I hack websites, applications, work tools, to inject my own code to do my automation. I also happened to be a very lazy programmer, so, I like to hack things. * I'm no body, buy I work in a major game dev as a main programmer. Can 1 dev, know how every other application inside out, write a algorism, safely clean up other people's mess? I doubt.) Exception might caught it so application won't crash but it's making your machine slower and slower. You know, they can then swoop in and save the day? And if you accidently clean the wrong stuff. (Who knows maybe they are the cause of the troubles. I guess I just don't really trust these enhancements. Year of 2017, if there's a win10 Store alternative, I'll get it from the store cause they are sandboxed, they don't mess with my registry. I don't think there's much rubbish on my PC that needs "clean up" to "speed up". I don't keep installing / uninstalling applications. I don't DL anything weird from the internet. (and people strike when things goes wrong, we know where they are.) The malware doesnt do much damage by itself, but opens up the possibility for hackers to remotely install other malware, with potentially devastating consequences. Most of my applications are from major big names, if they are not trustworthy, who are? Most of'em have huge user base too. According to Cisco Talos, only version 5.33 of the software is affected, and the more recent 5.34 version of CCleaner is malware-free. I have Adobe, Microsoft products, 3dsMax, VisualStudio, Unreal, Havok lib, etc installed on my PCs. I never need these typpa enhancements tbh. ![]()
